Whitehorse City Municipal Election

The time to select our new mayor and city council is fast approaching. Because of the large number of candidates, it is going to be extremely important to choose those people who are willing to stand up to protect the McIntyre Creek corridor, and stop any development of the proposed Porter Creek D.

Council Forum - Gold Rush Inn, Wednesday, October 10 -  6 pm- 9 pm PST
The forums that are being sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce are going to limit the number of public questions that will be asked.  It is my understanding that there will be two prepared questions for the Councillors, and ONLY one or two questions from the public.  So if the question is drawn from a hat, we need to up the odds that our question regarding the protection of McIntyre Creek will be one of the public questions, by each of us putting in the same question.  The question we are proposing is

" If you are elected on October 18, 2012, will you oppose the proposed Porter Creek-D subdivision and associated roads? and what is your vision for the future of Middle McIntyre Creek."

Mayor Forum - Gold Rush Inn, Thursday, October 11 - 6 pm - 9 pm PST
There will be three prepared questions for the mayor candidates, and five questions from the public.  Again, we suggest you put in the above question to the mayor candidates, as the mayor has been the tipping vote in other debates, so it is important that the mayor is also on the side of protecting McIntyre Creek corridor from development.

This is our chance to select people to represent us and the protection of this very important recreational, educational  and wildlife area.  Please ensure you are informed of where the candidates stand so you can vote wisely.  AND PLEASE VOTE!

Even though there are 6 councillor positions open, it isn't necessary to vote for 6 people if they don't support the protection of McIntyre Creek.  Something that was brought to my attention that I had not previously considered,  was that each vote counts.  If you only have 3 people who are for protection, only vote for them, and no others.  If you vote for 3 people who do not protect the area as well, then you are basically cancelling out your vote for McIntyre Creek, and giving the opposing candidates more votes which help get them into power.  You most likely have other issues besides McIntyre Creek to consider, but this way of voting is something worth considering, especially with the large number of people running for office.

  1. Will you please post a summary of the responses to your question about Porter Creek D, for those who aren't able to attend the forums? I'd love to know which candidates you are able to endorse, as this is probably the #1 issue for me in this election. Thank you!
