REMINDER - Annual General Meeting - May 28 - 7 pm

This is a reminder that the Friends of McIntyre Creek are holding their AGM  Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 7 pm.  The meeting is being held at the Yukon College in the glass class room.  Please come out and join us.  If you would like to join the Board, this is your opportunity to have an active hand.

Also thanks to the group who did a clean up along McIntyre Creek trails this weekend.      Gratefully there wasn't as much trash as other years, but sadly still much more than we would like to see on these trails.

Environmental Fair May 10 - 11, 2013

Thanks to the volunteers who came out to help at the display for Friends of McIntyre Creek. There were many interesting displays and demonstrations at the Fair, and there was a good turnout of visitors.

Congratulations to the winners of the FOMC draw for the mounted eagle prints donated by photographer, Gerry Steers of Gerry's Computer Magic Photography.

Rick Massie and Marguerite Roberts  were the lucky winners.

The eagle photos were taken in middle McIntyre Creek at the little pond by the water station, and below the seniors apartments and Yukon College area.  There is a topped tree where the eagles like to hunt dinner.

If you are interested in viewing wildlife right in our wilderness city, this is a great area for bird viewing.  You may also see other animals who pass through the area, such as moose, deer, fox, coyote, and other feather and fur creatures who either use this area as a home, or a corridor to go from the mountains to the Yukon River.

The trails are easy hiking so you do not need to be in great shape to enjoy them.  You can use the trails to get your exercise and fresh air and nature and changing seasonal  flora and fauna in the area.
When the wild roses bloom along the trails,  their scent adds to the enjoyment of the hike.

Is this yours? - May 12

I spotted this carpet along the side of the trail leading from Mountain View to Alaska Highway.  I wondered if someone was taking a short cut to the dump, and this carpet fell off their vehicle.  If you lost it, perhaps you could go back and collect it.

REMINDER - Environment Fair May 10 - 11, 2013 at Canada Games Center

Remember to come out to the Environment Fair at the Canada Games Center, Friday May 10 from 1 to 8 pm and on Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.  Friends of McIntyre will have a booth, along with many others with environmental interests.

We will be having a draw for two large eagle pictures mounted for hanging on the wall as well as:

- an interactive watershed model to demonstrate how different kinds of runoff (soil, herbicides, road) occur and how it ends up in waterbodies

- a large map of McIntyre Creek to generate discussion of trail use and allow people to identify areas where environmental impacts are occurring

- colouring pages for kids

- a photo slideshow

We hope to see you there.

First Crocus of Spring 2013 - May 8, 2013

I saw my first crocus today on my hike.  I was surprised as I normally see dandelions before the crocus, but it was blossoming in all its glory, with a number of fuzzy buds just waiting to join it.  There are more pussy willows popping as well.

I also saw my first robin in my front yard, so I think spring is finally here.  Now if we only get a summer to follow it instead of the cool, cloudy summer of last year, I think there will be a few happy citizens enjoying the Whitehorse hiking areas.

Spring 2013 McIntyre Creek area

It is tough walking the trails these days, as the hard packed deep snow trails, are melting, and footsteps break right through, making it pretty treacherous on the ankles.  Then there are the little lakes, and mud streams on most of the rest.  There is some dry parts, but they are the minority.  Ohh, the joys of spring hiking!

Mark these dates on your Calendar - Meetings and Events

On Friday May 10th & Saturday May 11th we will be participating in the Environmental Fair being held at the Canada Games Center. The hours for this event are Friday from 1 pm - 8 pm and Saturday 1 - 3 pm.  Drop by to see the displays and chat about the trails and wildlife and plants that you  enjoy in the McIntyre Creek area..  We are still looking for volunteers to help with this event.  Please call Christina at 668-5678 or email friendsofmcintyre@gmail.com if you are able to help us.  You only need to have some knowledge of the area through your use, and to be able to spare a couple of hours to man the table with a Board member.

The Friends of McIntyre Creek annual general meeting (AGM) will be held Tuesday, May 28 at 7 pm in the Glass Class Room at the Yukon College.  Everyone is welcome, and we hope you will come out and find out more about what we do. If you wish to join us on the Board, we would be happy to hear from you.  If you know of someone you think would be helpful on the Board, please let them know about this meeting.

We have tentatively set the date of June 18 for a summer celebration of McIntyre Creek.  More details later when the date, place and time are firmed up.

We also anticipate a  fall cleanup of an area around McIntyre Creek.  If you are aware of an area that needs cleanup of litter and junk, please email us.  We expect this cleanup to occur in early September, and again, will post more details.
