Wetland Keepers Course - August 2014

Friends of McIntyre Creek
Annual Wetland Keepers Course
8th ,9th and 10th August
Whitehorse.YT

Seven registrants spend the weekend learning about Wetlands.
Classroom and infield instruction included  the important classification  of  wetland types.
Practical hands-on instruction on surveying and documentation of wetland types, particular fauna, flora and invertebrates relative to each wetland type was learned.
Hydrology of specific wetlands was illustrated, as well as instruction on how to preserve  the status quo, change or  mitigate any destructive alteration which may  affect the status of the wetlands.
The course was very hands on and enjoyable but a little dampened on the Sunday.  However registrants did not seemed to be phased by the wet weather as, after all, we were out in the "wetlands'.

Thanks to Tami Hamilton and Cris  Guppy- instructors, courtesy of EcoFor, Environmental Consultants, and Celeste Sundquist -Bendall for the superb lunches.

Bear Encounters

The link below is an article on the Canadian Wildlife web page, that I received in a newsletter.  Since we have bears, and a lot of areas to hike, I thought it might be a good reminder to share this information.

Report on AGM May 27, 2014

The discussion at the AGM was very interesting, with many great suggestions for where the Friends of McIntyre Creek should be heading, and things that might spark more involvement with the group and park planning.

Sadly, our very active, and helpful board member, John Carney has left the Yukon, leaving a vacancy for the Vice President position, which was filled again by Gerry Steers, the previous VP.  Dorothy Bradley continued as President.  However, we are desperately short of people to fill both the Secretary and the Treasurer roles.  If anyone would like to step in to assist, please contact us.

The remaining Board members remain as last year with Jeff Marynowski, Celeste Sundquist- Bendall, Michael Bendall, Cathy Deacon and Al von Finster.

The Board members proudly showed the attending members the first place Water Stewardship Award won 2013, along with the  certificate placing the Friends of McIntyre Creek in second place for the year 2012.

Pictured from left to right:  Gerry Steers, Christina MacDonald, Cathy Deacon, Dorothy Bradley, Michael Bendall, Celeste Sundquist-Bendall.  Board members missing from the photo are Al von Finster, and Jeff Marynowski

All members are reminded that memberships expire March 31 or April 1 of every year.  If you have not renewed your membership this, please do so now.  You can download a membership form from the website http://friendsofmcintyrecreek.org

We look forward to your continued support, and hope there are some members who would like to step in and help us fill the two vacant Board positions.  The Board meets once a month, and there are a variety of treats provided by various members to make the meetings more enjoyable.  The photos below are a sample of the delicacies we enjoy, and which were provided for the AGM by Celeste Sundquist-Bendall.
