Report on AGM May 27, 2014

The discussion at the AGM was very interesting, with many great suggestions for where the Friends of McIntyre Creek should be heading, and things that might spark more involvement with the group and park planning.

Sadly, our very active, and helpful board member, John Carney has left the Yukon, leaving a vacancy for the Vice President position, which was filled again by Gerry Steers, the previous VP.  Dorothy Bradley continued as President.  However, we are desperately short of people to fill both the Secretary and the Treasurer roles.  If anyone would like to step in to assist, please contact us.

The remaining Board members remain as last year with Jeff Marynowski, Celeste Sundquist- Bendall, Michael Bendall, Cathy Deacon and Al von Finster.

The Board members proudly showed the attending members the first place Water Stewardship Award won 2013, along with the  certificate placing the Friends of McIntyre Creek in second place for the year 2012.

Pictured from left to right:  Gerry Steers, Christina MacDonald, Cathy Deacon, Dorothy Bradley, Michael Bendall, Celeste Sundquist-Bendall.  Board members missing from the photo are Al von Finster, and Jeff Marynowski

All members are reminded that memberships expire March 31 or April 1 of every year.  If you have not renewed your membership this, please do so now.  You can download a membership form from the website http://friendsofmcintyrecreek.org

We look forward to your continued support, and hope there are some members who would like to step in and help us fill the two vacant Board positions.  The Board meets once a month, and there are a variety of treats provided by various members to make the meetings more enjoyable.  The photos below are a sample of the delicacies we enjoy, and which were provided for the AGM by Celeste Sundquist-Bendall.

City Council Town Hall Meeting Apr 30-7:30 - 9:00 pm

Hello FOMC,

City Council is holding a Town Hall Meeting for the Takhini region this Wednesday (see below for details).  This is a great opportunity to speak with Council about the importance of protecting McIntyre Creek, and in particular Middle McIntyre, from destructive development.  While Council has voted to postpone any further consideration of planning for the Porter Creek D subdivision, development pressure never rests!  Also, given that the City will be wrapping up their Regional Parks Plan this June, a good opportunity to ask about park planning specific to McIntyre Creek Park.

FOMC Recognition

Friends of McIntyre Creek:

Our achievements were recognized by MLA Kate White in her address to the Yukon Legislative Assembly yesterday!  Below is the excerpt from her speech:

"This year, during Canada Water Week, the Friends of McIntyre Creek, received the Excellence in Water Stewardship award. This comes as no surprise to me, as this group has been a strong voice in the protection of the McIntyre Creek ecosystem.
Last year the group unveiled interpretive signs that highlight the richness of the area to visitors. Friends of McIntyre Creek plan on using the $1,000 prize to buy equipment for a wetlands keeper program this summer. The program will give volunteers the tools they need to monitor the health of the water, plants and animals and the creek. It is worth noting that this is the second year in a row that the Friends of McIntyre Creek have won a water stewardship award."
Stay tuned for more details about the wetlands keeper program!
